Kelowna-Lake Country

KELOWNA - Ron Cannan, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country is pleased to confirm that the federal government will contribute $100,000 towards planning for the Central Okanagan Bypass.  These funds compliment additional support for the planning project from the Province of British Columbia, the City of Kelowna , and the University of British Columbia.

“The Central Okanagan is one of British Columbia’s fastest growing regions.  The federal government recognizes the impact the Central Okanagan Bypass will have on the growth and economic vitality of the Okanagan and is committed to investing in infrastructure to ensure communities like our own continue to thrive,” said Mr. Cannan.

Mr. Cannan said the grant is in keeping with Canada’s new government’s commitment to municipalities made during the election and in the 2006 federal budget. The federal budget made significant investments in public transit infrastructure and tax credits, and retained the 5-cent per litre Gas Tax Transfer program as well as the GST rebate for purchases made by municipalities.

“This grant assists our municipality by supporting its efforts to improve transportation infrastructure in the community,” said Mr. Cannan.  “I congratulate the City and particularly Ron Westlake, the Transportation Manager, who has worked tirelessly to move this project forward.  It’s a big boost of confidence that the federal government supports the City’s efforts to create a long range plans for transportation,” he said.

“These are the first steps towards the ultimate goal of long-term economic sustainability for the community.  I am pleased that all levels of government are working together to make it happen,” concluded Mr. Cannan.
