October 25, 2010

Kelowna, BC – Ron Cannan, Conservative Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country is pleased to announce that the Okanagan Historical Society will receive federal funding through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program to assist in erecting a monument of Father Pandosy, a prominent figure in the establishment of the town of Kelowna.  The project celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Father Pandosy Mission.

“Our Government is proud to support the Okanagan Historical Society,” said Minister Moore. “By partnering with communities to support activities that celebrate our shared history and our rich cultural diversity, we are fulfilling our commitment to strengthen our communities and support arts, culture and heritage.”

“It’s so important that we keep our history alive in this way,” said Mr. Cannan.  “It’s a great way for people in our community, especially young people to connect to our community’s roots.  We want future generations to be aware of their origins and the Okanagan’s rich and diverse heritage,” he said.

"We‘re ecstatic, absolutely thrilled to receive this funding," said Marguerite Berry of the Kelowna branch of the Okanagan Historical Society.  "It‘s a huge part of what we need to move forward with this project."

Cannan said the funding of $49,000 over two years not only helps the Society build the monument but also recognizes and applauds the efforts of citizens who volunteer their time to ensure that our local heritage remains alive.

“It’s great to know that the Okanagan Historical Society is receiving this funding support.   Special thanks to the Society and its dedicated members who have tirelessly volunteered hundreds of hours and worked hard over the years to bring the Mission back to its former self and keep it going, said Mr. Cannan.”

The Government of Canada created the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program in September 2007. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations throughout Canada this year.
